1st: Deadly Avenger - David Bourke Constructions
Jason Thompson
Deadly Avenger delivered Jason Thompson his second victory in the $1.65 million Phoenix, storming home to claim the world’s richest greyhound race for slot holders David Bourke Constructions.
Having been transferred into Thompson’s care just days out from the series, Deadly Avenger justified every ounce of faith placed in him, producing a powerful late surge to overhaul early leader Eriza Sparkles in a thrilling finish.
The win capped a remarkable story that began when respected trainer Joe Borg agreed to lend the collar and lead of Deadly Avenger – a decision that sent shockwaves through the sport and sparked endless debate in the build-up to Phoenix night.

After 20 metres, RAM Racing & Total Container Solutions couldn’t have been happier with their charges Canya Mayhem and Eriza Sparkles (respectively) vying for the early lead, but as they approached the bend, racecaller Dan Hibberd summed it up best: “Deadly Avenger is nice and handy at the first turn.”
After a bumping duel with the Melbourne Cup champion, Deadly Avenger loomed up on the outside of Eriza Sparkles, took the lead down the back straight and from there, it was a Phoenix demolition job, ultimately winning by 4.1L from Canya Mayhem while Accredited was 5.3L abreast of the winner.
The celebrations didn’t take long to kick off with the crew from David Bourke Constructions lighting up the night with a celebration befitting the lofty title of the biggest party in greyhound racing!
