Community Engagement

Community Engagement

We at the MGRA see ourselves as more than a Greyhound Racing Club. Our board and staff are 100% invested in supporting local communities and businesses through investment, activities and participation at our state-of-the-art track and venue.

A proud member of the local community

As a not-for-profit organisation, focused on Greyhound racing and welfare we understand the bigger picture. Governed by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), our association races under the rules and regulations of this body and aims to promote Greyhound Racing as a vibrant, entertaining and thriving sport with animal welfare at its heart.

We also have a passion that lies beyond racing. As part of our move to The Meadows in 1999 and the building of the race track, it was always envisaged and supported by local government and the Hume City Council that The Meadows was to be for everyone. Ever since opening we’ve hosted and supported a wide and diverse group of organisations (non-racing and racing related), assisting them to thrive and offer community lead initiatives.

Local sports partner

The MGRA is a prominent partner in two of Melbourne’s biggest sporting leagues: The NFNL and RDNFL. Since 2016, the Melbourne Greyhounds have been the naming rights partner of the NFNL’s senior men’s top-flight football competition. It’s a long-term partnership we’re very proud of. While our partnership with the RDNFL extends to cover the entire league as a partnership sponsor.

Just like these leagues, the Melbourne Greyhounds is a not-for-profit organisation who’s always focused on supporting local community. Our association not only offers great community-based entertainment with twice weekly race meets, but our venue also operates as a unique state-of-the-art Conference and Events Centre and welcomes all Clubs to utilise our facility. We welcome community based organisations seeking a venue to host an event or fund raiser.

Local community partner

The Melbourne Greyhounds supports the local and wider community in many ways. One such way is through the use of a local Community Funding Grant. The fund invites not-for-profit organisations in the local City of Hume area, that are involved in health, education, sport and recreation, to apply for funding to support local initiatives and organisations.

Each year we grant up to $50,000 in funding to these organisations and engage ourselves by offering our venue to use, as well as our marketing channels, to support and assist them.

Community events partner

The MGRA allows community organisations the use of our Meadows venue for fundraisers and charity days related to greyhound racing events. One such community race event is the Great Chase Final, where community groups share over $40,000 in prizes while enjoying a great day at the races. The event offers fantastic opportunities for up-and-coming racing greyhounds, as well as providing a wonderful social outlet for Victoria’s disability sector.

Greyhound welfare partner

The welfare of greyhounds is the MGRAs first and overriding priority, on and off the track and during all stages of a greyhound’s life from birth to retirement. We celebrate our involvement with greyhound welfare organisations GAP (Greyhound Adoption Program) and Racing 2 Rehome. Both these organisations are regular visitors to The Meadows and utilise our venue for community engagements and fund raising events. On most race meets GAP volunteers and dogs are in attendance.
