Morton Withdrawn From Group 1 Topgun
GROUP 1 star Morton has been withdrawn from Saturday night’s lucrative Group 1 Topgun (525m) at The Meadows with injury.
The powerhouse son of Tommy Shelby took a fall in Monday night’s Group 3 Silver Bullet as a lead up for a tilt at the Topgun.
Trainer Jason Sharp said his once in a lifetime sprinter will be sidelined for the remainder of 2024.
“He’ll miss about two months, all going well,” Sharp said.
“We sort of knew he’d done some damage to his back left fibula and that vet confirmed that this morning.
“It’s really disappointing because the dog is going so well. His run in the heats of the Cranbourne Cup to run 29.22 showed that.
“All going well we might have him back up and going for the Brisbane Carnival.
“If we could defend his Gold Bullion title that would be great.”
Winner of more than $550,000 and 18 of his 40 racetrack appearances, Morton, a son of Tommy Shelby and Chloe Louise, is as well bred as he is talented.
Sharp plans on using this break from racing to launch a stud career.
“We’ll get him registered and draw some straws,” Sharp said.
“As a stud dog he ticks all the boxes.”
