Slick Splits the big winner, Raining Fire the fastest

Saturday night’s Maturity Classic was won in brilliant fashion by Slick Splits. He was faultless – fast out, strong mid-race and hit the line well.

It was the most significant win of the night, but not the fastest.

That title went to Raining Fire, and it might just mark the moment he steps into the spotlight.

His time of 29.70 is the 11th fastest at The Meadows this year.

He’s seen as a slow beginner with a big engine. But on Saturday that story changed – he jumped cleanly, positioned himself well under pressure and then let rip.

Whether it’s a turning point or a one-off remains to be seen, but we got a glimpse of what he can do when it all goes right.

From the 200m to 400m mark, he was the fastest greyhound of the night. And he didn’t fade – his run home was under 12 seconds which is rare air, the only other to manage it on the night was Dashing Slay.

His final 100m split ranked seventh, suggesting he’s still got that ‘sprint’ as opposed to just a massive motor, and beginning better is the key to unlocking it more often.

It might not have been the feature, but Raining Fire gave us something to talk about.
