Mile A Minute On Track For Nationals Defence
VICTORIAN straight track specialist Mile A Minute is warming up at precisely the right time ahead of his defence of the National Straight Track Championship.
In a dominant display, the son of Superior Panama and Medio Pasio scored at Healesville on Sunday to secure his third consecutive victory in Free For All company over 350 metres, defeating group stars Field Day and Hotel Whisky One by a length in 18.96 from box one.
It was his 22nd career win in 44 starts for trainer Brad Greenough and Tassie-based owner/breeder Rodney Campbell.
Greenough said he’s delighted with the star short-courser ahead of the fast approaching qualifiers of the Championships which this year culminate in Queensland.
“Keeping him ticking over at Healesville has been the focus,” Greenough said.
“We’re trying to ensure he stays sound and injury-free as the Victorian Straight Track qualifier approaches.”
The Group 2 Healesville Cup winner landed his 13th win from 19 starts at the straight track venue.
“That’s where he’s home – up the straight,” he added.
“He actually began quite well today, usually has been hit or miss, but he nailed it today.
“The dog’s got so much determination; he’s an exceptional chaser.”
The Victorian qualifier for the National Straight Track Championship takes place at Healesville on August 17.
Both the winner and runner-up will represent “The Big V” in the grand final, held in Queensland on Saturday, August 30.
The Group 3 $28,000-to-the-winner decider will take place over 350 metres on the Q Straight this year at The Q.
BRAD Greenough couldn’t be more thrilled about his two-pronged attack on next Saturday’s Group 1 Maturity Classic Final (525m) at The Meadows with highly talented contenders Saquon and Fastened.
The Pearcedale-based mentor believes Fastened has been slightly underrated but delivered an exceptional performance, winning his heat by 5-3/4 lengths in 30.13 to claim a spot in the $110,000 final, giving owner Greg Sprod two runners in the race.
He finished ahead of Paw Toronto and Vista Weird, the son of Aston Rupee and Promote making it win five from six starts.
“I think he’s not far behind Saquon on ability,” Greenough stated about Fastened.
“He’s capable of running close to five seconds early to the first mark; if he gets it right, we should be in the mix.”
Saquon impressively held off Desired Range, which surged late but finished three-quarters of a length behind in a time of 30.09.
“He’s a very special dog. He has the personality of a great dog; he just needs to put it all together,” the trainer added.
Jason Thompson’s Delicate, by Plaintiff and Shallow Witts, recorded the fastest heat time with a blazing 29.84.
Saquon has drawn box three, while Fastened has been allocated box five for the $75,000-to-the-winner decider.
