The Meadows is proud to announce the inaugural running of the Ron ‘The Hawk’ Hawkswell Cup, set to take place on Saturday, September 13 over the 730-metre distance – a fitting tribute to the voice most synonymous with greyhound racing in Victoria.

Ron Hawkswell, revered as one of the most iconic race callers in the sport’s history, has been a beloved figure in greyhound racing for over five decades. His distinctive tone and unwavering love for the dogs have left an indelible mark on generations of fans and participants alike.

“Ron Hawkswell is more than just a race caller – he’s a legend of our sport.

His voice helped define greyhound racing for so many of us, and we’re honoured to recognise his legacy with a race worthy of his name” said Melbourne Greyhounds CEO Scott Wuchatsch.

This special race will headline a celebratory night at The Meadows and is expected to attract some of the country’s most talented stayers in honour of “Hawk”.

The Ron ‘Hawk’ Hawkswell Cup replaces the Topcat Video Cup which has been won by some of the superstars of our sport including Miata, Burn One Down, Tornado Tears & Fanta Bale.

Also on September 13, The Pat Haas Classic – a Grade 5 event – will also be run in honour of a true trailblazer of our sport, the hall of famer, Pat Haas.
